​Domestic Violence in the United States

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.

1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.

1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.

On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.

The presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.

SEXUAL ASSAULT
Sexual Assault in the United States:
-
1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives.

In the U.S., 1 in 3 women and one in six men experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime.

51.1% of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8% by an acquaintance.

52.4% of male victims report being raped by an acquaintance and 15.1% by a stranger.

Almost half (49.5%) of multiracial women and over 45% of American Indian/Alaska Native women were subjected to some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime.

91% of victims of rape and sexual assault are female, and nine percent are male.

In 8 out of 10 cases of rape, the victim knew the perpetrator.

8% of rapes occur while the victim is at work.
Campus Sexual Assault:

20% - 25% of college women and 15% of college men are victims of forced sex during their time in college.

A 2002 study revealed that 63.3% of men at one university whom self-reported acts qualifying as rape or attempted rape admitted to committing repeat rapes.

More than 90% of sexual assault victims on college campuses do not report the assault.
